Character

Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are to some extent a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece by thought, choice, courage and determination.

Okay, lest you think I've gone the way of bible thumper over the past couple of posts, I reassure you that's not the case. I simply have come across some real gems!

This one, courtesy of my friend Jenn, was so perfectly relevant to an award her son received at school. For having strong character. Being fair and respectful.

How flippin' cool is that?

I explained that my mantra with my kids is "You might get good grades, which is great; you might be a good soccer player, which would be fun; but you WILL be kind."

Of course neither Jenn's son nor my daughters will be able to hold office, based on the Spitzer Rule of non-wussiness.

Small price to pay.

Seriously? No, c'mon, though. Seriously?

This is just how certain men are made. Spitzer and his peers just can't really help themselves. And we, as voters, wouldn't really want them to be honest or have integrity, because then they'd be wimpy, and we wouldn't vote for them.

Look, people are fallible. Trust me, I know this. But please do not insult me by telling me that they just can't help themselves. They can. They just don't.
